Since a great storm in 1987, when a large number of trees were destroyed or badly damaged on Brockwell Park, the friends of Brockwell Park have run a donation scheme to plant trees in the park.

A large group, including the donors, toured the park visiting the new trees. Here we heard stories behind why the trees were donated which included a birth, death and marriage.

As a conclusion to the family day event this musical evening was an opportunity for emerging groups to showcase their talent and gain exposure. Whilst there I had a chance to look around their new building in Wellfield Road in Streatham and hear about the work they are doing there.

The event was Streatham Youth and Community Trust’s contribution to the national family week initiative with fun activities and workshops throughout the day. I was pleased to see Keith Hill MP at the event and we were given a dance lesson where I discovered Keith was a much better dancer than me.

Despite the fact that Vera’s sight and hearing is not as good as it used to be, she has a huge spirit demonstrated recently when she went on a holiday which included rock climbing and horse riding.

Vera was joined by her daughter and grand children who had brought pictures of her when she was a child and a young woman. She did a stirling job dealing with all the press and photographers that had come to see her.

I was pleased to have the opportunity to congratulate Vera and thank the staff and volunteers for the wonderful work they do at the centre.

The Clapham Park coffee morning started in 2005 with a grant of £5,000 from community development. They have worked hard to build up the Luncheon club and now the club runs lunches every month which provides a hot nutrious meal for 30-40 older residents in an environment which they can meet their neighbours and make new friends, reducing isolation.
