Streatham Service of Remembrance

Representing the Mayor of Lambeth I attended the Armistice Day Service of Remembrance at Streatham War Memorial.

The event was introduced by Roger Bowdrey, which is organised by the Office of Rt. Hon Keith Hill MP and the South London Branch of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women in association with Norbury Royal British Women. He reminded us of the ruthlessness of the nazi regime, following the lines of the poem ‘First They Came‘ he spoke of how they persecuted different groups and his pride that today that these groups could come together on this day to remember those who thought for us.

The occasion was led by service this year was led by Rt Revd Dr Richard Cheetham, Bishop of Kingston.

Sidney Nathan AJEX read the Exhortation

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

All those present responded ‘We will remember them’.

I found the ceremony deeply moving, at 11 silence fell around all those present as the police halted traffic and we all took time to think of fallen comrades.

The Rt Hon Keith Hill lead the wreath laying on behalf of the Streatham Consituency followed by a huge variety of associations, centres, services, Lambeth Council, politcal parties, churches, synagogues. clubs, committees and groups from the area.
