Big Open Day Live at Lambeth College Vauxhall Centre

Lambeth College’s BIG open day was an open day with a BIG difference.  It was an opportunity for local people to see the centres new facilities including the new performing arts centre and 160 seat theatre, to meet staff and students, see performances and exhibitions of student work and get valuable information advice and guidance to help them choose their courses.

The new building is amazing and I was stunned by the amazing views of the common from the top floor. The building is fresh, modern and a far cry from cramped classrooms that I remember studying in. The staff, governors and students were clearly extremely proud of their college and the work they are doing there.

I enjoyed seeing some of the amazing art work that the students had done and pleased to present students with certification for their excellent work.

New Park Road Baptist Church Community Fun Day

I was pleased to be asked to return to the New Park Road Baptist Church Community Fun Day, as I had the pleasure of visiting as Deputy Mayor last year.

Unfortunately the weather was not being as kind this year, however there was still an enthusiastic turnout with free food, drink and activities for all that attended.

Trees for Cities Woodland Family Picnic – Clapham Common

The picnic was to celebrate the tree planting carried out as part of the capital woodlands project which aims to raise appreciation of London’s woodlands. Trees for cities have planted an amazing 300 new trees on the common and are planning further planting in the coming year.

The were free activities and workshops based on a woodland theme for children to enjoy at the picnic, with face painting, arts and crafts, storytelling and games. At the event I was pleased to be able to take time to talk to the Friends of Clapham Common who had a stall and were talking to people about the commons masterplan including plans that would mean Windmill Drive would no longer be a through road.

Upper Norwood Joint Library – Crystal Palace Festival and Victorian Afternoon

This was my first visit to the Library, which if you do not know it is on the edge of the borough and is jointly funded with the London Borough of Croydon. The library, which unusually is run by a committee of local people, librarians and councillors, was buzzing with activity when we arrived and were quickly introduced to the Mayor of Croydon. With magic shows, talks and other activities based around the Victorian theme the event had attracted a wide range of people and ages.
